Masinissa
b. c. 238 BCE · d. 148 BCE · Numidia
Name
- Greek
- Μασσανάσσης
- Latin
- Masinissa
Numidian prince of the Massylii who fought first for Carthage in Spain and then defected to Rome before the Zama campaign. His cavalry, long the decisive arm of Numidian armies, proved critical at Zama, where Masinissa's charge in the late stages of the battle broke the Carthaginian line. Rome rewarded him with a unified Numidian kingdom; his subsequent border provocations against Carthage were a proximate cause of the Third Punic War. Lived to nearly 90, dying as Rome moved to destroy Carthage.
